“We don’t know how they came into contact with each other, but it doesn’t appear that it was an ongoing relationship,” said Phoenix Police Department Sgt.. Tommy Thompson. “It wasn’t a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship or anything like that.”
Cano, a convicted sex offender, was registered to South Phoenix address across the street from a school.
“It’s very upsetting,” said Bob Claesgens, who lives nearby. “He is a two-time offender. Both instances were brutal attacks previously, and whoever released him made a big mistake, obviously.”
Claesgens and other neighbors said they received notices in the mail detailing Cano’s past sex offenses, which involved binding and sexually assaulting his victims, and alerting the neighborhood to his arrival.
But other neighbors, like Fran Greeson, said they were not aware a sex offender was living in their neighborhood, and were disturbed that Cano was registered so close to a school.
“I can’t believe that they didn’t keep up with him and know that he was living next to a school, or across the street from a school down there,” said Greeson. “He’s way too close.”
Police say Cano has been booked into the Maricopa County Jail on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of sexual assault. One of the murder counts is for Robinson’s unborn child.
